This was a very informative, easy-to-read book. I was homeschooled growing up and am now homeschooling my first grader. I totally appreciated Beth's advice and insight, as both a homeschool graduate and now a homeschool mom. She had so many practical, hands-on suggestions for homeschooling, as well as encouragement and advice that made me feel like what I'm doing is worth it. :) I totally recommend this book! It makes for a great reference but read it cover to cover when you buy it! It's quick and easy to read and worth the time. :)Product details

I am just beginning to think about homeschooling. My daughter is 19 months so I still have a few years before we need to make a final decision to homeschool. Also, we are still years out from planning curriculum if we choose to homeschool. I found this book to be an easy read and fairly descriptive of what your first year may entail. I especially liked the section where the author outlined the areas you should consider including in your curriculum during the first year. For each section (ex. math, history) she listed her own suggestions of how she enjoys teaching the subjects. I bookmarked this as a section to return to if we decide to homeschool. Overall, a helpful read although I did get the book for free off a blog I follow.
This is a great book to read once. There is wonderful information, but it literally took me 1 hour to read, and then I deleted it because I wrote down what I needed from it. I do recommend this for anyone who even thinks about home schooling. For my full review check out Mom's Thumb Reviews momsthumbreviews.com
I've actually home schooled several children at this age. It's not an easy task, but well worth it in the long run. This book is an awesome guide for those that are questioning themselves on if they should or shouldn't home school their first grade child.
It's a very well laid out book. It gives good guidance on what to teach and good resources to get started. My only issue is that it makes you feel like you have to teach every subject in First grade. There are some subjects we aren't diving into fully until second or third grade. I think at this age, learning through play is still very important.
Before I bought this book I was undecided to homeschool my son or not. he was going into the 1st grade. The book was pretty detailed and gave me a lot of information on what it takes and gave me the confidence. I decided not to homeschool him for other reasons but do believe this is a great book to build confidence and gain more insight on homeschooling a 1st grader.
This book was an excellent overview of what to expect when delving into the daunting world of homeschooling! I was in public schools all my life, and have never had any experience with homeschooling, but the state of the public schools in my area has made me determined to find another way.
This book did a wonderful job of easing my fears with an encouraging introduction, and then went on to address virtually every concern I had. I am confident that I can teach my child on the first grade level, but I wasn't sure how to handle other issues, namely "socialization." This book gave some truly excellent ideas for coordinating field trips, contacting area homeschoolers and dozens more. Ms. Jones also went over the legality aspect of homeschooling, something which I had honestly not even considered. After reading this book, I found a homeschooling group on Facebook, and I am thrilled to say that we have already been on our first field trip!! What a fantastic experience. Thank you so much, Beth Jones for giving me the courage to forge ahead on this adventure!
"Home School Your First Grader" supplies a step by step guide for those who want to home school their children and don't know where to start. The author was home schooled grades k-12 and seems to come from a solid base of knowledge of the structure and challenges of home schooling. Ms. Jones not only prepares the person planning to home school for the scope of the commitment they're in for but also for the censor of others, the challenge of multiple kids and the necessity to check state curriculum laws. If you're looking to get started in home schooling, this is a good guide to start you out on the road to educational success.
